God is not your Father
For you have not received the spirit of bondage again in fear; but you have received the spirit of adoption of sons, whereby we cry: Abba (Father). (Romans 8:15)
To many Christians struggle with a relationship with God because they relate to him as their heavenly father in the same way that they related to or are relating to their earthly father. You see many of these Christians had earthly fathers that were never in their lives or if they were, their fathers were terrible parents. Here are just a few reasons why they may have been bad dads. And why God is not like their father:
“Behold what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called, and should be the sons of God.!” 1 John 3:1
“As a father hath compassion on his children, so hath the Lord compassion on them that fear him.” Psalm 103:13
“For though my father and my mother have left me: the Lord hath taken me up.” Psalm 27:10
“The Lord is gracious and merciful: patient and plenteous in mercy.” Psalm 145:8
“The Lord is sweet to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works.” Psalm 145:9
“The Lord lifteth up all that fall: and setteth up all that are cast down.” Psalm 145:14
“The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon him: to all that call upon him in truth.” Psalm 145:18
“For thou, O Lord, art sweet and good: and plenteous in mercy to all that call upon thee. .” Psalm 86:5
“A father of the fatherless, and the judge of widows. This is God in his holy place: .” Psalm 68:5
“As for my God, his way is perfect and undefiled: the words of the Lord are fire tried: he is the protector the buckler and the shield of all that trust in him.” Psalm 18:30
God, our heavenly Father, loves each one of us better than any earthly father ever can.
God wants us to think of Him and experience Him as our Daddy. In our main scripture, Romans 8:15 ,that we started off with in this devotion, the word Abba was used. A literal way of translating the word Abba is Daddy — that close, intimate, loving word many kids use in addressing their fathers. God wants to be known as our ultimate Daddy.
To those who have been abused by the actions of your earthly fathers, let me encourage you, run to God — your heavenly father — who always loves you, always cares for you and can always, always be trusted —will never, ever let you down. Realize you can relate to Him. Why? Because He is not your Father...that is your Earthly Father. He is your Heavenly Father.
