The Society of Saint Pius X's First American Priests
One may wonder, whathas happened to those who founded the SSPX in the United States. Below we will trace as best as we can, the present location of those Americans ordained by Lefebvre in the SSPX until 1984. It appears that there were 23 ordained in this time period. 22 are listed here and another appears, who was ordained in 1982, but apparently was not a member of the SSPX in 1980. Let us look at a summary of the statistics:
Four remain with the SSPX today, one from the 1970's and three from the early 1980's
Three have been consecrated bishop outside the SSPX.
Fourteen are functioning as Traditionalist priests outside the SSPX
Four have departed the priesthood altogether.
Credited With Training in Novus Ordo Seminaries
It should be noted that the original course in the SSPX was five years. Since the SSPX was founded in 1970, the first class that could have been trained totally at Econe was ordained in 1976. Therefore all those ordained prior to that time had to be credited with training from another seminary. This includes:
Clarence Kelly
Gregory Post ordained in 1974 at Powers Lake, North Dakota
Anthony Ward
Daniel Dolan
Donald Sanborn ordained in 1976
Anthony Cekada spent two years in Econe and was ordained in 1977
William Jenkins Jr. spent two years in Econe and was ordained in 1978
Remain With the SSPX Today
Gregory Post is the only American ordained in the 1970's to remain with teh SSPX today.
Stephen DeLallo entered in 1977 and was ordained in 1983
Christopher Hunter Entered in 1977 and was ordained in 1983
John Hogan entered in 1977 and was ordained in 1984
Have Been Consecrated Bishop
Clarence Kelly was consecrated by Fr. Alfred Mendez, who was appointed bishop by Angelo Roncalli in 1960.
.
Donald Sanborn was consecrated by Fr. Robert McKenna O.P. in order to prepetuate the material formal heresy of Fr. Guerard des Lauriers O.P.
Still Function As Traditionalists
This is divided into two groups, the dissident dozen and those who have departed the SSPX and function independently. The latter are listed here.
Anthony Ward, departed at the end of 1976
Hector Bolduc ordained in 1974 and dismissed in 1984
Terrence Finnegan ordained in 1977 and departed in the 1980's
In additiion to the three bishops above, nine othes departed. This group consists of various parts. In 1983 seven who had been ordained previously by Lefebvre departed. These include the three bishops above and:
Anthony Cekada, ordained in 1977
William Jenkins Jr. ordained in 1978
Joseph Collins ordained in 1980
Eugene Berry ordained in 1981
Vowed to Accept Wojtyla as Their Pope And Then Immediately Departed
In 1983 in order to obtain ordination, two made a vow to accept Karol Wojtyla as pope:
Martin Skierke
Thomas Zapp
In 1984 three others made a similar vow and joined the nine that departed in 1983 to bring them to an even dozen:
Dennis MeMahon
Daniel Ahearn
Thomas Mrozka
With the exeception of Dennis McMahon, it is believed that all are functioning as Traditionalist priests
Departed From the Priesthood Completely
Dr. Boyd Anthony Cathey, ordained in 1979 and departed int eh early 1980's
Douglas Laudenschlager ordained in 1980 and departed, date of departuer unknown
Reger Petit, ordained in 1980 and depated, date of departure unknown.
