"Michael…who standeth for…thy people," — Dan. 12:1-12

It is alleged that Joseph Cardinal Siri was elected Pope in 1963 and prevented from answering whether or not he accepted. He was then elected again in both 1978 elections with the same results. Thus it is claimed that he was pope-elect, that is in the conditon that happens to a man after he has received sufficient votes to be elected Pope, but has not yet been asked whether or not he accepts. Upon being questioned the pope elect answers either that he unconditionally accetps or he rejects the election. This first proposition was put forth in 1985 and perpetuated until siri's death, May 2, 1989.
After Will the Catholic Church Survive the Twentieth Century? procved the 1978 and 1963 elections invalid, the proposition was changed to plae Siri's election on October 26, 1958, and further that he had accepted, took the name of Gregory XVII, then was forced to resign. He was then re-elected in 1963 and both 1978 elections. Please see the Siri File for more details on the only man in history that is claimed to be Pope, but never knew it himself.
