Act of Faith: O my God! I firmly believe that Thou art one God, in three Divine Persons, Father, Son and Holy Ghost: I believe that Thy Divine Son became Man, and died for our sins, and that He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe these and all the truths, which the Holy Catholic Church teaches, because Thou hast revealed them, Who can neither deceive nor be deceived. Amen.
Professions of Faith
Saint Thomas says: I answer that, As stated above (OBJ 1), a new edition of the symbol becomes necessary in order to set aside the errors that may arise. Consequently to publish a new edition of the symbol belongs to that authority which is empowered to decide matters of faith finally, so that they may be held by all with unshaken faith. Now this belongs to the authority of the Sovereign Pontiff, "to whom the more important and more difficult questions that arise in the Church are referred," as stated in the Decretals [*Dist. xvii, Can. 5]. Hence our Lord said to Peter whom he made Sovereign Pontiff (Lk. 22:32): "I have prayed for thee," Peter, "that thy faith fail not, and thou, being once converted, confirm thy brethren." The reason of this is that there should be but one faith of the whole Church, according to 1 Cor. 1:10: "That you all speak the same thing, and that there be no schisms among you": and this could not be secured unless any question of faith that may arise be decided by him who presides over the whole Church, so that the whole Church may hold firmly to his decision. Consequently it belongs to the sole authority of the Sovereign Pontiff to publish a new edition of the symbol, as do all other matters which concern the whole Church, such as to convoke a general council and so forth. (II-II Q1 A10)
Throughout history the Popes have written Professions of Faith to counter the heresies of their age. The most famous Profession of Faith was written by the Council of Trent and amended by the Vatican Council, and prescribed for use by the Universal Church. Baptized non-Catholics make this Profession of Faith, upon entering the Church as do heretics, when they are reconciled with the Catholic Church. Bishops make this Profession prior to consecration and clergy make this Profession of Faith prior to entering many offices.
Every Catholic should be ready to recite each of these Professions of Faith and Catholics daily recite the Apostle's Creed at the beginning of the Rosary.
Profession of Faith Prescribed by Pope Michael, 1992
Catholics are bound to profess their faith publicly, whenever silence, subterfuge, or their manner of acting would otherwise entail an implicit denial of their faith, a contempt of religion, an insult to God, or scandal to their neighbor. Canon 1325.
