Ember Days in September
Ember Day announcement: Wednesday September 19, Friday September 21 and Saturday September 22 are Ember Days. Four times a year we mark the change of seasons with fasting and prayer for the new season. We have often commented on the power of the Church, when all fast and pray together. The virtue of doing penance is joined with the virtue of obedience to the Church. Voluntary penance is certainly a good things, but penance done in loving obedience to Jesus through his Church is indeed a good thing as well. Let us take these three days and pray for the needs of the Church.
Ember Saturdays are the ordinary day for ordinations. Let us pray that Jesus will send His Church worthy men to be ordained to the priesthood. The September Ember Days often coincide with the Feast of Saint Matthias the Apostles. Episcopal consecration is ordinarily conferred on one of the feast of the Apostles, since a Bishop is a successor of the Apostles. Let us pray to Saint Matthias on his feast, September 21, that he may intercede before the Throne of God to send us a Bishop, so that the Mass can be restored.
Amen, amen, I say to you, that you shall lament and weep, but the world shall rejoice: and you shall be made sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy. (John 16:20) Yes, we are sorrowful that the Church is so afflicted in these days. Many are attacking her and desire her destruction. And yet, let us recall that the Catholic Church is indestructible. Jesus has promised to be with us all days until the end of the world, and He always keeps His promises. This time of trial has been sent to us for our education. Let us learn from this time of trial to conform ourselves totally to the will of God, for in this consists the road to true happiness. Thy will be done. Let us meditate these words, when we next say the Our Father. Let these words be a rule of life, not just something that falls from our lips regularly!
