US copyright law applies to all documents produced and grants copyright without requirement of notice to US officials for a certain period of time, which is extended by application. Since these documents are published in the United States, this law is applicable in addition to any other protections afforded by international law.
Although Canon Law does not cover copyright per se, violation of a person's intellectual rights is actionable under Canon Law, and certain official ecclesiastical books may not be printed without permission from the Apostolic See, which include the Missale Romanum, Breviarum Romanum, Pontificale Romanum, Codex Juris Canonici, Rituale Romanum, Preces et Pia Opera, both Latin and translations, etc.
All official documents of the Holy See until October 9, 1958 are owned by the Vatican In Exile, anything to the contrary notwithstanding. Documents produced by Roncalli, Montini, Luciani, Wojtyla or Ratzinger or those under their authority are not permitted to be reprinted under Canon 1399, if they in any way violate the Divine and Catholic Faith.
Note well that some pages have been provided by others and they retain their full copyright and these have been reprinted here with their permission. Please contact the author if permission for use is desired.
We would like to thank all who have contributed material to this site, whether they retained or relinquished their copyright, as has been done on some occasions.
